SUN TRIO (Finland)

Trumpeter Kalevi Louhivuori , drummer Olavi Louhivuori and bass player Antti Lotjonen represent the younger European jazz generation. Sun Trio's career was launched internationally when they won the final of the Young Nordic Jazz Comets 2006 competition, held in Iceland, in October 2006. The judges said they were, skilled and dynamic musicians that form a complete whole and create their own musical space according to the Nordic lyric tradition. In addition Kalevi Louhivuori was granted the soloist prize the same year. An outstanding personal soloist who brings new dimensions to his instrument both technically and musically. The Sun Trio's music draws in from many influences. The Trio combines different musical genres with impressionistic melodies and ambience in an open-minded way. The sounds range from deep meditative passages into full-on energetic explosions of sound. Names such as Arve Henriksen, Miles Davis and Dave Douglas have had the most influence in the trio's music. The Trio's two CDs on the Italian CAM jazz label: 'The Time is Now' (2009) and ' Dreams are True' (2011) have made a big impact on the European jazz scene. Individually the SUN Trio members perform in a number of other Finnish and international ensembles in Europe. Drummer Olavi Louhivuori is a member of the Tomasz Stanko Quintet, with which he has toured also in the US and Australia. Bassist Antti Lotjonen is a member of the Ilmiliekki Quartet, touring Australia and Canada.
